Critics Consensus

Kill Bill is admittedly little more than a stylish revenge thriller -- albeit one that benefits from a wildly inventive surfeit of style.

There's nothing like a good 'ole revenge heist (complete with a hit list) to make this film one of Tarantino's best.

...'Kill Bill' stands perfectly well on its own as the masterpiece it is, and functions flawlessly as a statement of principles, as an exemplary action film, and as a vast celebration of cinema and life. [Full review in Spanish]

Both films combined gift Uma Thurman the role of her career and, for the first film, she received BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations for Best Actress...she was not recognized by the Academy, which is absurd, in retrospect.

One of my favorite movies of all time, I’m shocked that it wasn’t explored in creating an entire universe that was built around it. To this very day besides the two movies and Fortnite expansion short film, I still crave for more kill bill content and fortunately I’m not alone. Definitely recommend.

This is Tarantino at his most stylish and unapologetic. The story itself is simple, but the way he presents it makes every scene feel larger than life. The action, music, editing and visual style are all fantastic, while Uma Thurman completely owns the role. It is violent, exaggerated and sometimes feels more like a live-action comic book, but that's exactly what makes it so much fun. An incredibly entertaining first volume.

A fun action film with nods to classic Japanese samurai films.

I remember seeing this at the cinema, the first half of Kill Bill. I stuck it out until the grim ending, but that was only because I was young. Today, at my current state of seasoning, I'd most likely walk out much sooner. QT, the great pastiche artist, evidently saw Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2001) and thought hmmm, how can I do this and make it my own? So, he hired the same choreographer, but failed to hire Ang Lee to direct the movie for him. Too bad. Kill Bill Vol. 1 is brazenly stupid and ridiculous. In the cinema it was ear-shattering, especially the anime-style portion. QT's trademark cussing wit, the cool retro music, the gangster swagger, all gone! Pulp Fiction a fading memory. After Kill Bill his movies got longer, portlier, more self indulgent, just as sweary and violent, and ever more distasteful.

I'm a big fan of the style and bevy of influences it draws upon, especially the animated sections. Uma's performance is very solid. Overall, it is a fun watch for sure but I just think some of Tarantino's other films do more for me personally.
