Critics Consensus

Even if its desultory drift keeps it from reaching nirvana, Kurt & Courtney is an entertaining attempt to chronicle the life and death of a troubled genius.

Turns out that the whole movie is wobbly, a slapdash, unsure concoction of hearsay and decrepitness that does for the documentary format what shows like Hard Copy do for TV journalism. "Sleazy" isn't the word for it. Go to Full Review Michael O'Sullivan Washington Post Apr 11, 2014
Our culture has notoriously short attention spans and memories, but Kurt and Courtney goes a long way toward undoing the meticulous public relations campaign that Love has orchestrated in an effort to whitewash her tarnished image. Go to Full Review Daphne Merkin The New Yorker Apr 11, 2014
The true circumstances of Cobain's death remain cloudy, but one comes away from the film unnerved by the distance travelled. Go to Full Review Carey-Ann Pawsey Orca Sound May 15, 2020

Does not seem very unbiased. You are left to draw your own conclusions. But it certainly is an interesting 94 minute watch. Go to Full Review Benjamin H. Smith Decider Mar 18, 2019
Kurt & Courtney wasn't well received upon its release and 20 years later it fares no better. Go to Full Review PJ Nabarro Patrick Nabarro Jan 27, 2019

The sheer eccentricity, deprivation and unreliability of the players Broomfield visits imprints that a violent end was an almost inevitable outcome to the Kurt & Courtney tale Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Apr 10, 2021 Best Kurt Cobain documentary ever. Much better than Montage of Heck. See more Sep 3, 2019 Great documentary with a lot of evidence framing Love for the death of Cobain in exchange for a lucrative record deal and kurt cobain's fortunes from nirvana, Broomfield can't openly pin Courtney as the main suspect because throughout the film she is clearly making calls to his producers and financers threatening them with legal recourse. So he implies it as much as possible without agreeing to the obvious fact that she hired a killer to off Kurt and make it look like a suicide , El duche was killed right after he gave an interview for this movie stating that he was approached by courtney love to make a hit on kurt cobain. I also suggest watching Biggie and Tupac alongside this damning account of what truly occured to Nirvana's lead singer. See more Jan 23, 2019 I had to stop watching after being subjected to the promo tape by El Duce. "Ok, i'll talk to you on the condition you show my promo tape". same with the guy with the red painted nails See more Jun 8, 2017 Since I've been in a recent spate of documentaries and music related films, I finally gave this one a spin. Mostly it's a failed experiment, in that the director constantly interjects with what he'd envisioned doing with the music that Courtney Love naturally denied any chance of him using, so you get a lot of missed opportunities. Ultimately, it feels as if the director wasn't sure what take he wanted to put forward then meanders around looking for a voice for the film instead. Rental, at best? See more Jun 1, 2017 Weird Shit.. "..now think about that " See more Dec 23, 2016 Only 44% audience approval? That doesn't sound right, AT ALL. This was a brilliant documentary, despite how you believe Kurt died. Why did this film and "Soaked in Bleach" get such low ratings on Rotten Tomatoes? Somethings up with that..
