Huntin P @PaxVobiscum80 6 days ago An early career outing for the, I still think humorously named, Florence Pugh. Lady Macbeth, transplanted to England for the movie, is better known as an opera by Shostakovich. The opera is wild and savage and hilarious, a huge success until Stalin attended a performance. It's the only opera I personally ever took the trouble to see twice. This dreary movie, alas, is not a patch on the musical version, so I say watch a production of that with English subtitles, or just listen to the classic Rostropovich recording (London 1970s, for EMI). See more Madam D @Madam1948 Aug 16, 2026 Interesting plot based on themes from Macbeth. Shows the limited choices women had in the 19 century. Florence Pugh does a wonderful job as the woman who stood up for herself - although not in socially acceptable methods. See more Alain E @AlainE May 12, 2025 A period drama where chronological placement plays an insignificant role. Pugh is magnificent as a repressed and neglected wife who gradually realizes that she can control the conditions of her existence and actually eliminate any opposition. In the final scene she ends alone, but she is still young and there is ample time for a second and third act. There are also some hints that she may be pregnant, but this never develops. This is a story that is not concerned about right and wrong. The heroine has certain needs and she is out to obtain satisfaction. There is no frontal nudity, but the film earns its R rating based on its complete disregard of any ethical standards. Sparse, cruel and explicit.. don't put this baby in the corner! See more alan g @agenser Oct 13, 2024 Not Shakespeare. You already know how it ends so why watch. See more Read all reviews
