Kenya 02/21/2022 A classic movie with Diana Ross. She was phenomenal as this was her first acting gig. My all time favorite movie. Billie never would have wanted this. They made a movie with some actors about a person and made up a storyline about said person. That is how I see it. The film is not entirely true to the facts of Billie Holliday's life, it leaves out much of her career, and doesn't fully show us who she is. I can imagine someone who knows nothing about Billie Holliday, would leave this film mislead in some aspects. However, what it does a good job at is portraying the essence of her. And that is all thanks to Diana Ross's performance. The film does harken back to the autobiography it is named for, and the first half chronicling Holliday's younger life are page for page from the book. If you are looking for a harrowing film about addiction and tragedy; this is the film for you. If you are looking for a film about Billie Holliday, this may not be the best pick. A must see for any fan of Diana Ross, however! And for fans of Bob Mackie's designs! Every ensemble in this film is breathtaking and elegant. Good period detail, a lot of one-dimensional characters, but the star here is the spectacular performance by Diana Ross; no disrespect to Liza Minnelli, but Diana Ross was robbed of an Oscar. It is a shame that the movie is just a cliched biopic that can't think of much to say about Holiday and never really earns Ross' work here.
