Critics Consensus

A deep-sea thriller with an unusually strong cast and potent ideas, Leviathan quickly plunges into an abyss of weak thrills and lame kills.

The latter half of the film is one long feeding frenzy, guided by a familiar horror-film principle: survival of the best-looking. Go to Full Review Richard Harrington Washington Post Jan 1, 2000
Leviathan is intermittently interesting, but it's a bad sign that the movie starts losing its punch when the monster shows up. Go to Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Mar 2, 2024

The combination of well thought out characters and an incredible cast to bring them all to life is a huge reason why Leviathan will always be one of my personal favorite underwater monster movies. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Joel H @786Joel 5 days ago Imagine John Carpenter’s classic 1982 science fiction horror film, The Thing, but set underwater instead of Antarctica. That’s Leviathan in a nutshell. And it seems that seven years of improvements in visual effects and a slightly larger budget didn’t do this 1989 movie any favors. Or maybe it’s just that the cast of Leviathan isn’t as capable or charismatic. Peter Weller does his best to be the cool leading man here, but it just comes off as corny. However, there are some decently creepy moments in Leviathan, especially at the beginning, before it bubbles up into some truly ridiculous territory. See more Reggie S @Beebers Oct 1, 2026 Can't count the number of times I've watched this movie. Leviathan is a cult classic. It's so bad, it's good. I love it! See more Zachary B @RT55281018 Sep 30, 2026 Epic movie for its time. Now an occult classic. I have watched this movie several several times. I never get bored of it. See more Squid M @RT05722511 Aug 10, 2026 a hit and miss movie, it would have been the B movie back in the day. See more Smyles A. @Smyles Mar 24, 2026 I have a deep love for 80's scifi... This film for me is amazing. It's like "The Thing" but underwater locked away with a monster.... See more Jorge H @jorge02 Mar 13, 2026 The film is so horrible, a highly derivative, low-effort mash-up of superior sci-fi horror films like Alien and The Thing, featuring a nonsensical, rushed ending, I would NEVER recommend this movie, not even to my own bloodline See more Read all reviews
