Tsang’s perceptive first feature has a big heart but doesn’t cave to simplistic sentimentality. It delivers a welcome story about two emotionally wounded characters helping each other to learn to deal with grief. Go to Full Review Katie Rife RogerEbert.com Apr 22, 2022

While par for the course in terms of its premise as well as much of its plotting, “Marvelous and the Black Hole” is still somewhat refreshing in its visual style and experimentation. Go to Full Review Jessica Gonzales Geek Vibes Nation Jul 17, 2025

Empowering coming-of-age films for women are still too few in number, and Marvelous and the Black Hole is a superb addition to the hopefully increasing amount. Go to Full Review Amy Smith InSession Film Jun 13, 2024

With a few tweaks, there is a strong movie in here. I just wish that some of the writing didn’t feel as flat and that there was a strong demographic group for the film. Go to Full Review Manuel São Bento MSB Reviews (Ghost.io) Jul 24, 2023

Keith B @Okbullard Oct 2, 2026 I wasn't sure what to expect with this but I enjoyed it. I really liked Cheers years ago and thought Rhea Perlman was pretty good but she was great in this. Miya Cech was outstanding as well. Give it a look you'll enjoy it. See more Dallas H @FozzieMcFly Dec 24, 2025 It's a cute movie, even if it has the vibes of a low-key after-school special. See more Gail O @RT03499331 Aug 28, 2024 Refreshing & well done! Rhea casts a spell…great journey. See more Manuel S @msbento May 30, 2022 Rating: A- "Marvelous and the Black Hole is a massive surprise, being one of my absolute favorites from Sundance so far. Kate Tsang's feature directorial debut is a huge success that definitely places her as a filmmaker to pay close attention to in the following years. With a remarkably subtle, detailed screenplay, Miya Cech and Rhea Perlman spread their sparkling chemistry across the screen, delivering two of the most entertaining performances I've seen in the last few days. A heartwarming story that begins with the impact of the loss of a mother and finishes with an emotionally powerful, uplifting, magic(al) show that I'll remember for quite a while. The young protagonist is so relatable that I couldn't help but drop a couple of tears by the end." See more May 9, 2022 Heartwarming and hilarious. Rhea Perlman looks like she's having a blast and Miya Cech is going to be a star. See more May 1, 2022 Heartbreaking and heartwarming. Familiar yet brand new. So many things make this movie worthwhile and enjoyable. The story moves at a great pace. The writing is clever, and fits the characters perfectly. The acting is fantastic. The visuals are fresh and engaging. This movie will warm your heart, and make you believe in magic. A+ See more Read all reviews
