Nathan J. @TribianiRamoray May 23, 2026 Rated: 7.4/10 ⭐️ Wrapping up my Sherlock Holmes Day marathon with a totally different take on the character. Expected a classic whodunit, but this emotional look at an aging Sherlock dealing with his fading mind totally blew me away. What Worked: • McKellen is incredible. Watching his vulnerable, 93-year-old Sherlock try to hold onto his mind hit me right in the feels. • Holmes and Roger’s sweet relationship in the apiary really anchors the emotional core for me. • Burwell’s gorgeous score gives a gentle vibe that fits the aging theme perfectly. The Friction: • The pacing is definitely on the slower side. Jumping between three timelines really dragged the momentum down for me. • The Japan subplot felt a bit disconnected. I honestly just wanted to get back to the bees and the farmhouse. The Verdict: Watch this if you want a deeply moving, character-driven look at an iconic hero’s final days. Skip it if you need the fast-paced, action-packed sleuthing of traditional Holmes stories. See more Margaret K @Margolis Dec 20, 2025 Ian McKellen is brilliant. Nothing about this film isn’t brilliant. I would watch it again. See more Logan D @Greynomad38 Sep 11, 2025 Long retired Sherlock Holmes (Ian McKellen) attempts to recall his last case while fighting memory loss. An intimate, character-driven work from Condon whom, with the exception of the Twilight films (likely not his fault), has directed three films I've enjoyed immensely. A nuanced performance from McKellen elevates this reflective story even more. There's not much mystery. Just meditation on life, death, and the man hidden in the stories. See more James M. @BenjiMiller Jul 28, 2025 A beautiful display of the art of cinematography, very well staged and presented visually stunning. While not an action packed Holmes we have known Ian McKellen delivers a masterpiece performance depicting the senior years of the great detective. The supporting performances of Laura Linney and young Milo Parker are excellent and compellingly complete the reality of a great man’s approaching his demise! See more Dominique R @Domino502 May 21, 2024 Perfect movie. I cried in the last 20min. If this is hated by someone then that person does not enjoy classy classical storytelling. Ian is so amazing as Sherlock, he portrays a lonely man that struggles with relationships while being the best at his career. As Sherlock begins to form a grandfather bond child his regrets and few mistakes in life seem to become more redeemable as he comes into his last stages of life. If you are okay with waiting 10mins before the story becomes really interesting you’ll find it was worth the wait. I can’t rave enough about this movie. Clean enough to watch with children is always a plus. I Loved it! See more Andrea K @RT69186543 May 11, 2024 A sweet story concerning regret and the attempt to make something right before it is too late in life. It's never too late to learn and apply the lessons life has handed us over the years. See more Read all reviews
