Critics Consensus

Heartfelt and quirky, though at times broad, Muriel's Wedding mixes awkward comedy, oddball Australian characters, and a nostalgia-heavy soundtrack.

See more Rick D @RIckD468 Jun 13, 2026 Toni Colette burst onto the international stage with this heartwarming tale of an overweight girl, Muriel, with no self-esteem who wants nothing but to feel good about herself. Rachel Griffiths plays her friend Rhonda who helps her escape the misery of the small beach resort town of Porpoise Spit. Oh, and the music of ABBA plays a crucial role. Muriel's path is long and circuitous, and includes changing her name to 'Mariel'. At many times, she lies so much it's hard to take. But ultimately, she's sympathetic.
