Conceived six years ago, Michel Franco's near-future dystopia feels ripped from headlines that haven't yet been written. While protests rage in the streets, Marianne's high society family prepares for her wedding. At first, only splatters of green paint and the appearance of Rolando, a former employee seeking emergency medical funds, intrude on the festivities. But soon the party is unable to keep the reckoning at bay, and what follows is a swift disintegration of law and order defined first by class lines, then by disastrous government recapitulation.

Critics Consensus

Despite solid performances, New Order's merciless brutality and unfocused gaze threaten to derail its message.

A wedding becomes a riot as society disintegrates around it, in Michel Franco’s provocative and uncompromising vision of late-stage capitalism.

A fascinating, stylish, uncompromising thriller for all its repugnant prejudices: punk rock movie-making for the ruling elite.

New Order very effectively persuades you that a real-life revolution might well be every bit as ugly, horrifying and un-Hollywood as this shows - and that it is on the way.

A-

Instead of being suggestive and sticking to entertainment, this film is dark and is more focused on telling the truth and showing it all.

By the time Franco joins together strands that the audience will most likely have seen coming, New Order grinds to a halt.

There are no sympathetic or redeeming characters, the politics is very muddled and any message it wishes to convey is drowned out by the violence. New Order is a short, sharp shock to the system. Albeit a deeply unpleasant one with no redeeming features.

wow. I haven't read any of the reviews or commentary of the film as I want to share my unique thoughts. This movie disturbed me more than any other film I've seen, in a good way. Everything that has happened in America in the past few years this movie is a cautionary tale to say the least.

Political criticism delivered with unrelenting brutality. Begins slow and ends with "wtf did i just watch?" impression. Nice movie for date night.

Horrible movie. It is realistic with a sadistic touch. It was our first time in a movie theatre after one year and a half and it felt horrible. Don’t recommend. Wanted to throw up afterwards.

What I can only presume is the movie equivalent of being dropped head first into a blender.
