Morgan C @RT06625057 Sep 29, 2026 Beautiful conclusion to Rodriguez’s Mariachi trilogy (El Mariachi (1992), Desperado (1995), Once Upon a Time in Mexico (2003)). I love how Rodriguez will recycle cast members the likes of Danny Trejo, Cheech Marin, Antonio Banderas, and Salma Hayek in his movies. He is truly a great director with a deep love for his people and his culture. I only wish that we got more scenes between Banderas and Hayek because I feel like they had great chemistry together. The movie’s pacing exposition starts to drag during the second act but those are all minor flaws that this movie has. What this film lacked in writing and pacing it made up for in beautiful cinematography and amazing performances by all of the actors especially Johnny Depp. All-in-all I think this movie as well as the entire Mariachi trilogy is worth a watch. A mouse fart would have woken up mariachi! Antonio Banderas remains a compelling lead as El while Johnny Depp adds fun as Sands, the CIA agent he ends up working for. Behind the camera, Robert Rodriguez almost delivers an epic on par with "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" but suffers from an overly complicated plot with too many twists and characters. It either should have been longer to flesh out the story more and less twisty to focus on the main one. Thankfully, the action is fun and energetic, making for a decent watch, even if its the weakest the trilogy. See more Chris S @Janomi Jul 28, 2026 Once Upon a Time in Mexico is good because it expands the Mariachi world into something bigger and messier. The story brings in coups, assassins, cartels, corruption, shifting alliances, guns, guitars, dust, blood, and mythic Mexican action-movie energy. Johnny Depp is the most entertaining part of the movie as Sands. He is strange, funny, slippery, and completely untrustworthy, and Depp gives the film a jolt whenever he appears. Antonio Banderas still has the quiet, tragic, dangerous presence that makes El Mariachi feel like a legend walking through the wreckage. The problem is that the movie is overstuffed. There are so many characters, schemes, and side plots that El Mariachi sometimes gets crowded out of his own story. The style and music still work, but the film is messier than Desperado and more enjoyable in pieces than as a whole. This is a wild action movie with a lot of famous actors like Antonio Banderas and Johnny Depp. The story is a bit confusing because there are too many characters, but the action is great. Antonio Banderas plays a hero who shoots guns from a guitar case. Johnny Depp plays a corrupt CIA agent, and he steals every scene he is in. It is very violent but fun if you like stylized action. I guess we can say old is gold. They just don't make movies like this nowadays. See more Ed B. @EdLee Jan 12, 2026 Once upon a time in Mexico has a lot of moving pieces. Starting Antonio Banderas as El Mariachi , a hitman embroiled in conflicts between cartels and corrupt government. Movie has a great Ensemble cast and never lacks on action. Worthy of a viewing.
