It's as remarkable a depiction of how grief can subsume us and bend reality to its needs as you'll ever see, directed by a talent with a bright future behind the camera.

The film, a strong directorial debut from Tamblyn, creates a waking nightmare of seemingly unresolvable pain and anguish."

Tamblyn may very well have encouraged McTeer to spin into a ludicrous lioness, but her performance doesn't play well opposite Shawkat's.

If that sounds a bit florid, then you've got the idea. Paint It Black is purple and overcooked, swelling to burst with rococo emotion. It doesn't always hold together but it's too outstanding to be ignored.

Tamblyn shows a confident hand at directing the difficult and emotionally complex material, while drawing out a truly haunting performance by Shawkat.

I really enjoyed this book when I read it years ago and hoped that a great adaptation would be made. I was disappointed after watching it. They chose the wrong lead for Josie. Just because an actress is a good actress doesn't mean she's the right actress. Casting aside, the movie itself was well directed and the acting itself was pretty good. I would recommend watching it, but don't expect it to be something you will revisit.

Powerful performances by Janet McTeer and especially Alia Shawkat. Amber Tamblyn's directorial debut is a tour de force.
