South of the border, burnout Airbnb manager Toby (Steve Little) coasts through life on booze and bong hits. But his groove is thrown off balance by the arrival of Paul Melton (Dylan Baker), an American self-help guru in freefall, and Michelle (Bojana Novakovic), his high-strung daughter/manager. While Toby loses himself in Paul's latest book, tensions between father and daughter flare, culminating in a horrific tragedy. As Toby gets pulled into the frenzied aftermath, local police and sworn enemies quickly descend. Set and shot on the Mexican Pacific, "Riptides" is a dark tropical comedy about dreams, delusions and drifting far, far, far out to sea. The latest from writer/director Alex Karpovsky asks the relevant and timely question: if everyone had something to say, would we be able to hear anything?

Karpovsky maintains a firm command of his movie’s mood (until the conclusion), delivering dark comedy in a thoroughly enjoyable way. It helps that his two leads, Little and Novakovic, are at the top of their game. Go to Full Review
