Critics Consensus

With Audrey Hepburn luminous in her American debut, Roman Holiday is as funny as it is beautiful, and sets the standard for the modern romantic comedy.

A rom-com colossus, and one that has been aped and emulated in everything from Notting Hill to Trainwreck to Jennifer Lopez’s recent Marry Me...

Rome is the perfect backdrop for this royal-commoner romance (and war of wits).

It is purely a rom-com, filmed with warmth and style – as sweet and inconsequential as a scoop of gelato on a summer’s day.

Exquisite, dry-eyed (I'm not crying! You're crying!) romantic comedy. Audrey Hepburn won an Oscar, her debut in a leading role, and well deserved. Her smile at the end of the movie, fighting back tears, is Oscar-worthy in itself. She plays a princess on a state visit to Rome, who finally snaps and runs away from the schedule, and has a day-off in Rome. Greg the Peck is the journalist who recognises her (eventually), then pretends he hasn't so that he can be her tour guide and escort on her unofficial holiday. He intends to make a big story and a big profit, but neither he nor the princess reckon with, what do people say today, catching feelings? He's handsome and she's adorable.

A classic of its genre. Dated of course, but to be appreciated for what it was. Romantic, humorous and fantastical. One can immediately see the appeal of Hepburn and why she then went on to have the career she did.
