For an action romance it really hits the mark. Lots of wit and charm, great lead as actors and well thought out character arcs. The hook was effective and the pacing even. Sure, there are things that could have been improved slightly, but whenever I think of the action-romance genre this is the first movie that comes to mind.

In the beginning of the movie Joan Wilder is a hapless hopeless romance writer living with her lovable cat Romeo. By the end of the movie she is a hopeful heroine. Joan's widowed sister Elaine is kidnapped by smugglers Ira & Ralph. They informed Joan she needs to bring the map that will lead to the location of El corazon that was sent to her to Cartagena. While on the bus Joan distracts the bus driver the bus crashes into Jack t Colton's vehicle. Jack reminds her of a real life Jesse. A character she created in her romance novels. Jack only agrees to help Joan because she promises him 375 in travelers checks. As they go out on their wild adventure they encounter everything from antique smugglers, zolo & his menacing military. They get help from an unlikely source Juan a drug lord who it turns out is a huge fan of Jones novels. The movie is like a cross between Tomb Raider & Raiders of The Lost Ark. The film was produced by Michael Douglas. This movie is a fun action adventure comedy.

I haven't seen this in many years and just rewatched it on Tubi. Still funny and compelling and well worth watching. Danny DeVito, Kathleen Turner, and Michael Douglas are great in this, I look forward to watching Jewel of Nile and War of the Roses again too!

I was very surprised when I realized how well this film has aged. It plays with the usual clichés of the genre in a humorous and largely intelligent way. Still worth watching and a pleasure even in the 21st century.
