It departs from the usual anime clichés by delivering a mature, melancholic narrative with visceral and very well-choreographed sword fights, only faltering due to a slightly slow pace in the middle. Meeting a lovely woman and falling in love, he begins to question his actions. Adapting the manga, this film portrays the "origin" story of Ruouni Kenshin. I viewed the 90s anime a two decades ago and absolutely loved this goofy but deadly character they created. I didn't think I needed to know his past in detail and I was correct. Although they touch on his past many times during the show, a lot is still left unanswered. It should've remained that way. The cinematography is beautiful and the choreography of fight scenes is excellent but it adds nothing significant to the legacy of Kenshin.
