Huntin P @PaxVobiscum80 Sep 28, 2026 Probably the best Cameron Crowe movie. John Cusack plays the iconic version of the character that is basically, well, John Cusack. John Mahoney (Frasier's dad) is superb as the girl's father, a man with a bad secret. Say Anything is one of the most charming high school graduation movies, and there were many of 'em in the 1980s. Smarter and not so cliched or sentimental, and it leaves you wanting more. A boombox." John Cusack shows up with maximum romantic confidence and minimum understanding of personal boundaries, while Cameron Crowe somehow turns teenage heartbreak into something genuinely funny, sweet, and ridiculously memorable. It’s awkward, heartfelt, hilarious, and packed with that dangerous teenage belief that one grand gesture can solve absolutely everything. 5/5. Hold the boombox. Ignore common sense. Believe in love. See more Antony B @RT29664284 Aug 5, 2026 What lingers isn't the iconic images or quotable moments, but the quiet humanity beneath them. These are people standing at the edge of their futures, carrying dreams that are still soft enough to be bruised. They don't have the language for everything they're feeling, so they stumble through conversations, make impossible choices, and discover that sincerity is often the bravest thing a person can offer. The romance succeeds because it never asks its characters to become extraordinary. Instead, it celebrates the courage of vulnerability. Loving someone means allowing yourself to be seen without the protective armor of certainty. It means risking embarrassment in exchange for authenticity, trusting that honesty has a value even when it doesn't guarantee the outcome you hope for. See more Marco L @decatur555 Aug 4, 2026 Say Anything remains one of the defining romantic films of the late 1980s. John Cusack is perfect as Lloyd Dobler, an uncertain young man who knows exactly how he feels even if he has no idea what to do with the rest of his life. Ione Skye gives Diane far more depth than the usual brilliant, unreachable girl, especially through her complicated relationship with her father. Cameron Crowe writes both teenagers and adults with intelligence, warmth and unusual emotional complexity. The famous boombox scene has become part of cinematic history, but it works because the relationship around it feels honest rather than idealised. Funny, vulnerable and filled with future Hollywood stars in supporting roles, it remains a genuine classic. See more Read all reviews
