Critics Consensus

A life-affirming, if saccharine, epic treatment of a spirit-lifting figure in sports history.

[It] may be too airbrushed for its own good, but in the end nothing can stop this story from putting a lump in your throat.

The overlong runtime (loosely encompassing the benchmarks of the real-life symbol of hope) definitely doesn’t help in building toward a thrilling climax.

This is a great movie for 3 basic reasons: Great acting by an excellent cast; compelling character's backstories; faithful retelling of a compelling story set in a historical era -- the great depression. I have seen this movie at least 5 times over the years -- sharing it with friends and loved ones. A great 'underdog' story.

A tend to dislike films about animals. But I absolutely love this movie. Extremely well told story. You kind of have to like period movies, because its mostly about a jockey that has a hard life during the 1930's.

I absolutely adore this movie. Great for the whole family. It’s an awe inspiring true story with perseverance and heart. I still tear up even though I’ve seen it several times.

This is a solid movie for children who love horses, but it is not as true to the racing industry as other movies of its breed.

Not even a big horse racing fan, but the acting was fantastic and the story is inspiring and pretty much sticks to the true story making it even better!

Seabiscuit is a solid, inspiring sports drama that’s easy to get invested in even if you don’t know much about horse racing. The film does a great job of building atmosphere and showing how determination, timing, and belief can change the course of things in unexpected ways. What makes it stand out is the emotional weight without feeling overly dramatic or forced. The characters are well-developed and grounded, and the story focuses more on resilience and second chances than just competition. It has a steady pace, but it never feels boring—more like a slow build that pays off through its tone and performances. Visually, it captures the era well and gives the whole story a warm, classic feel. It’s not flashy, but it doesn’t need to be. Overall, it’s a meaningful and enjoyable watch with a lot of heart. I’d rate it a 7/10—well worth seeing if you like uplifting, character-driven stories.
