Critics Consensus

Self-Help cements director Erik Bloomquist's knack for offbeat horror, weaving together gore, humor, and familial unease into a deliriously twisted genre mashup.

"Self-Help" is another rollercoaster ride from Erik and Carson Bloomquist that leverages familiar trappings with a chilling performance from Jake Weber..

"Self-Help" is a Halloween holiday treat with narrative tricks that will keep movie goers guessing. "Self-Help" is worth watching if only for the bonkers opening sequence showing a young Olivia at her Halloween/birthday party at an arcade.

Director Erik Bloomquist continues to flex his quirky style with charming, yet damaged characters in a horror landscape. The familial exploration only adds to the quality of the cultish nature of this film.

A very confused movie that opens as stabby horror, shifts into cautionary cult terror, and then alternates with tacked-on gore while asking us to take seriously the lead’s path into mental wellness.

If the climax is a bit mundane compared to what has preceded it, we’ve still been given a fair amount of roller-coaster ride.

A pleasant surprise of a movie. It has subplots galore, with varying degrees of effectiveness. All in all, a fun one time watch I'm glad I caught in a theater.

What did I just watch? I went in blind even though I could tell it was a low budget film based on the poster. Everything about it questionable, confusing & mediocre. I was falling asleep towards the end. I’m just upset I didn’t sleep through all of it.
