Critics Consensus

A dark teen comedy with an explosive twist, Spontaneous reaffirms Katherine Langford as a rising star -- and marks debuting director Brian Duffield as a filmmaker to watch.

Brace yourself for an explosive and gory coming-of-age comedy, because Spontaneous is sensational, sick, and shouldn't be missed (again).

Estimable Australian Katherine Langford is fun and feisty as American schoolgirl Mara, and she has a great, tender chemistry with Charlie Plummer, who plays her sweet-natured boyfriend.

An absurdly funny, gripping and moving film that boasts one of the best screenplays of the year.

Spontaneous, writer-turned-director Brian Duffield’s debut, manages to be unnerving, from the heart, and especially relevant to today’s world, making it one of the year’s best surprises.

That's how good Langford and Plummer are. Their snarky, sarcastic rapport makes light of everything so that they can smile through the horror.

“Spontaneous” is the kind of movie that is sure to find an audience, but it’s skittish genre hopping could just as easily turn some people off.

A very unique coming of age story. Really liked it.

It was such a unique film but kind of bizarre. Katherine Langford was amazing and stole every scene. Even so I'd probably never want to watch it again because there was an enormous amount of unnecessary crude language.

It´s one of those bad movies that actually truns out to be good you know? I believe it has a pretty important message and it delivers it in a fun way to its audience. I LOVED IT and I definitely recommend it.

this movie is everything it is wanting to be. fun, silly, and touching - recommend if you are in high school and feeling the excitement/dread that comes with growing up.

The premises of the movie was great, unfortunately the movie dragged on and on into a boring, cringy and unfunny snooze fest. The 2 romantic leads had no chemistry, mainly because she looked 30 and the boy looked 15.The female lead was 99.9% annoying during the whole movie which lead you to hoping that her time of blowing up would come sooner than later. No resolution at the end, nothing explained, just a poor attempt to copy school teen flicks of the 80s.
