Released in 2000, Eminem's song "Stan" -- about an obsessive, unstable fan -- remains iconic. So iconic that the term stan was officially added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2017. In the song, the titular character handwrites a series of emotional letters to Eminem, repeating the line: I'm just like you. That refrain serves as a guiding light for this unconventional and fully authorized feature, which follows a highly curated cast of real-life stans whose deep personal connections to Eminem mirror some of the themes found throughout his lyrics. More than just an exploration of fandom, the film examines the complicated relationship between one of the world's most private artists and his massive public persona. Through stylized recreations, rare archival footage, intimate interviews, and an exclusive original interview with Eminem himself, it offers a raw, loud, and revealing journey across his career -- and the passionate audience that has grown with him.

The anatomy of obsession is an absorbing enough topic in an age of runaway social media and the false sense of intimacy it can engender among the celebrity-fixated. But it's a curious juxtaposition Mr. Leckart constructs.

The stans themselves are not massively interesting, and the film is happy to frame them as whimsically eccentric nerds rather than anything more psychologically problematic.

"Stans" isn't the be-all, end-all telling of Eminem's tale, but it puts his stamp on it for now, using the lens of his fans to give it perspective.

Both a tribute and a cautionary tale, "Stans" turns Eminem’s iconic song into a gripping exploration of fandom itself by blending fan stories, cultural insight, and rare access to the artist for a documentary that’s as emotional as it is unsettling.

A good film to watch while you’re cleaning out your closet. I won’t back down, because Stans is a worthy documentary for all interested in Eminem. Sadly, there’s still no Mekhi Pfifer.

I didn’t finish it. My girlfriend and I left around 45 minutes into it. I can enjoy a good documentary but this wasn’t one. We’re both huge Eminem fans, but we couldn’t sit through the whole thing. I didn’t care about the super obsessive Em fanatics or their opinions on him.
