Critics Consensus

While it does represent a new foray into raunch for the normally PG-13 Sandler, That's My Boy finds him repeating himself to diminishing effect - and dragging Andy Samberg down with him.

Yet again Adam Sandler has taken a fairly clever concept for a broad comedy and just detonated it with some of the stupidest, most repetitive gags imaginable.

Warning: this film contains scenes of incest, masturbation, gerontophilia, statutory rape and Adam Sandler.

Not nearly as terrible as burped-out Sandler disasters of recent years, there's enough funny stuff here to remind us of his talent.

Sandler continues to play the same idiot character he has done since "Billy Madison" and "Happy Gilmore," but the difference is this guy lacks any of the innocent charm that helped make those movies work.

It’s wild to me how movies like this get dragged through the mud by people who seem completely allergic to having a sense of humor. This movie is comedic gold if you’re not sitting on some imaginary high horse pretending to be the ultimate authority on cinema while your greatest contribution to the art form is arguing with strangers on the internet. Countless genuinely entertaining movies get overlooked because a bunch of self-appointed keyboard critics decided that enjoying a movie isn’t enough—you apparently have to dissect it like you’re defending a film studies thesis. Sometimes a movie is just damn funny. This is one of them. Loosen up, enjoy the ride, and stop pretending every comedy needs to qualify for the Criterion Collection to be worth watching.
