Jim S @RT55723453 4 days ago This movie has gotten terrible reviews, and honestly I don't understand why. It's a perfectly fine horror thriller for what it is. It's not trying for the lofty goals of The Descent, nor is it seeking to be the next Jaws. It IS trying to create a tense thriller that mashes the danger of cave diving with creature feature terror, coming at a cast of young entitled people who are about as stupid as they get. Terrible things happen, mostly that they bring on themselves, and we get to enjoy the ride. The effects were pretty cool, the acting was solid for the types of characters we were getting. Honestly, I don't get the bashing. Didn't care for it? Fair enough. But to call it terrible means perhaps you didn't get what the film was going for. Want a horror thriller that you shouldn't take too seriously, with quality effects, some good jumps, and a satisfying finish? This could do! It almost seems like these are people with no ability to express emotions. Someone died? "Oh, my friend died. Let's move on." In addition, the CGI is awful—at the level of movies from 2002. And the cheesiness—the cheesy lines they say are just so bad that you simply can't stand this movie. You spend the movie with these insufferable characters, progressing through increasingly preposterous scenes, until the movie is full-on insulting your intelligence as a viewer. The shark special effects were pretty good, and there is some quality in the filmmaking. Also, the main character, played by Katheryn Newton was the one character that wasn't completely awful, and she was an acceptable protagonist. But MAN was this a tough one to get through. RT See more Marco L @decatur555 Sep 27, 2026 The cave setting gives The Devil's Mouth an effective survival premise: confined spaces, darkness, water and a predator are enough to create some genuine tension. Kathryn Newton and Lana Condor help carry the film, and the claustrophobic setting works best when the threat remains physical and immediate. The problem is how quickly everything becomes familiar. Too many situations are easy to predict, several solutions can be guessed well in advance, and the logic behind the shark's presence in such an isolated environment becomes increasingly difficult to ignore. Jeff Wadlow keeps things moving and delivers a few effective B-movie moments, so it is never a complete failure. But originality is scarce, and most of its ideas feel borrowed from stronger survival and shark films. Watchable, occasionally tense, but far too formulaic to leave much of an impression.
