Tilda Swinton² is haunting in the gothic ghost story The Eternal Daughter, an ode to familial female ties that leaves much to unravel after the fog lifts.

A metafictional work elevated into something new: deeply felt and true as a story about parental enigma, spectral remembrance and ingrained British repression. Go to Full Review

I loved living in the world of The Eternal Daughter... I enjoyed the tete-a-tete between mother and daughter. This is the feeling I want when I watch a genre film—pure escapism with a side of thought-provoking storytelling. Go to Full Review

The Eternal Daughter is undoubtedly an interesting film that will surely leave its viewers reflecting on it long after the movie’s final frame with a misty and chilling atmosphere that sets the tone of the whole story. Go to Full Review

w donald s Dec 8, 2022 Superb acting from all three actors See more Rivi G @Jeremiahwasabullfrog 1 day ago I really enjoyed watching this film even though it was quite melancholy and has this over-reaching sadness that permeates the entire film. It feels like a Gothic film in its scenery and mood, but it goes much deeper. The main character is a lovely person but seriously repressed in her emotions. Speaking as an American, I feel I don't understand the whole stiff upper lip breeding of the British, but I could so relate to her quiet sadness and desperation at having lost a parental loved one. She lives in a past dream life where her mother still exists, but it feels like she can't move forward and pass through the pain. I know this film is not to everybody's liking, but I found it incredibly interesting. The scenery is darkly beautiful. I guess I cold sum up the entire film with those words, darkly beautiful. See more Mayreni S @RT90276624 6 days ago I love Tilda, her performances are always flawless. However the script never caught me. The main character’s conflict wasn’t engaging enough for me to care about her, and was it supposed to be a plot twist that she was imagining her mother? I thought it predictable from the start. See more ben F @BenFranz Aug 10, 2026 I was bored. Really bored. From beginning to end. This a film that you can go make a sandwich and the restroom and not miss a thing. See more Nic F @munitots May 18, 2026 I can sum up this movie with: Joanna Hogg finds Joanna Hogg interesting, I don't. Didn't realise this was her film until I started, but pressed on as I love Tilda Swinton (amazing in two roles) I assume Julie is the adult version of the Julie in 'The Souvenir' movies, aka: Hogg's autobiographical self). The photography was beautiful, but trying way too hard to create an atmosphere that just was not present, like the plot. Multiple shots of fog rolling in, animal noises, noises nobody bothers to investigate, nobody turning lights on at night, a grown woman too scared to go and close a window, Julie "shocked" poses, etc. There wasn't enough plot here to fill a short, let alone a 96 minute film. The "twist" was so tropey you see at at about the 2 minute mark, and by the time it comes, you have been bored into a coma. Julie's "work" seems to be a rich person's hobby, and she seems very lax about making progress on it or putting in any effort, which I see echoes of in the plot.
