Chris S @Janomi 2d The Battle of the Five Armies is very solid, and its strongest material is Thorin’s descent into dragon sickness. Richard Armitage gives the role real intensity as Thorin is consumed by greed, paranoia, and pride. His internal collapse gives the movie its best emotional conflict. Martin Freeman remains the emotional anchor as Bilbo. Even when the film is overloaded with armies, creatures, and spectacle, Freeman keeps Bilbo grounded through sadness, decency, and frustration with Thorin. The farewell between Bilbo and Thorin is the emotional highlight. It brings the trilogy back to friendship, regret, and the cost of pride in a way that works better than much of the surrounding battle material. The scale is impressive, but this is the clearest example of the Hobbit trilogy being expanded too far. It is entertaining, but too much of it feels stretched. At best, I was laughing at how horrible it was. At worst, I was cringing and waiting for it to end with my head in my hands. Horrible continuity, the acting is awful except for bilbo and maybe bard. The entire movie is basically gray scale. The only noticeable color I noticed was gold coins, red hair, and a cart of cabbage. Everything looks flat and horrible, you don’t grow to care about any of the characters other than bilbo and bard, and the rest are not even memorable unless they have memorable physical features, and even then remembering their names was a challenge. Orlando bloom looks CGI’d to hell, or he has horrible makeup on. The elf ears look fake, 2 of the dwarves don’t look like dwarves, presumably because they either have a love interest or are a main character. Just awful. So so so awful. While The Hobbit did change a few things, like Legolas being involved, at least it’s pretty damn close. The only thing I didn’t like about these movies was all the CGI. The LOTR trilogy did almost everything with practical effects. Why did they choose to make this so different.
