Critics Consensus

Appealing and colorful without being particularly distinctive, this animated adventure is a small fish in the big pond of family entertainment but can be relied upon to turn a frown upside down.

Not that a picture book for the two to four-year-old crowd can’t be expanded into a satisfying narrative feature film universe, but this high seas adventure as personal growth is fairly by-the-numbers stuff.

This animated tale of a grumpy finboy is as bland as blueberries, yet some wonder if sad Mr. Fish can inspire suicidal thoughts. Nah. Positive messaging swims will all these fishes.

“The Pout-Pout Fish” takes full advantage of the underwater population and has a clever-enough screenplay and a terrific vocal performance from Amy Sedaris as a trio of dolphins who aren’t as nice as they look.

I could imagine "The Pout-Pout Fish" as acceptable entertainment for little children, as it provides pleasant colors and an undemanding story with some nice life lessons about confidence and friendship.

While the film aims to expand the hero’s journey and liven it with new characters, action, and plot, it muddies the wonder and whimsy of the source material, complicating a story lauded for its simple, emotional tenderness.

Instead of leaving the theater uplifted, young audiences may find themselves wearing the same pout-pout expression as its main character- and not in a charming way.

Movie was great and very entertaining for my 4 year old grandson. Unfortunately, they had a power outage at the mall which affected all the movies in the theater. We missed the last 20 minutes of the movie and did not see the ending.

It was good at depicting the anxiety around loneliness and how we need each other and everyones unique gifts.

Maggie liked the fish, the baby fish, chaos. I (the parent) thought it was a really cute movie esp for toddlers. Easy to follow along and while predictable, it was very entertaining for my 3 year old.
