Critics Consensus

Unsettling and at times lurid, Baran bo Odar's The Silence is a thrilling foray into film noir.

With a script that calls for much crying and lamenting, pic could have easily descended into turgid meller territory were it not for the ensemble's nuanced perfs. Go to Full Review Walter V. Addiego San Francisco Chronicle Jul 17, 2020
Although it may not fire on all cylinders, "The Silence" offers much to admire. Go to Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian Jul 17, 2020

The atmosphere - weirdly chilling in the high summer of southern Germany - is oppressive. It's the worst of cliches ... but I was on the edge of my seat until the very last. Go to Full Review Rob Hunter Film School Rejects Jul 17, 2020
It's a harrowing and uncertain race to avoid history repeating itself, and as the thriller elements play out the emotional peaks and valleys are still allowed room to breathe. Go to Full Review Emilio Luna El antepenúltimo mohicano Jul 17, 2020

The Silence manages to cause discomfort, but doesn't quite transcend and despite that manages to remain interesting. [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review Cristina Álvarez López Sensacine Jul 17, 2020

Dennui S @dennui Nov 16, 2025 Ulrich Thomsen is so creepy. Beautiful cinematography too. See more Rob W @Mr_Inbetween Jul 28, 2025 Cannot believe we never heard of this, so well done. From the makers of dark! See more Rebecca F @RT39081121 Jun 17, 2025 This is one of my all time favorite movies. I would definitely call it a psychological thriller because it keeps you on the edge of your seat. The characters are amazing.... you become deeply invested in their lives. If you like psychological thrillers, this is definitely a must see!! See more Isabelle T @RT54228478 Apr 25, 2025 If you love detective series this one is outstanding. The police are investigating three murders and as the story unfolds it turns out to be so much more. There is no guessing at the outcome. The story is rich and the acting superb. Binge worthy See more Arya S @AnyaS Sep 5, 2024 Completely engrossing story and characters, although widower police detective David is a little over-the-top weird and dramatic, and the final moral choice made by the villain doesn't make complete sense. But definitely worth the view. See more jorge g @RT05604383 Aug 18, 2021 Excellent police procedural with great atmosphere, suspense and performances. It's the earliest film work by German director Baran Bo Odar, who also directed the techno-thriller "Who Am I" and the more well known sci-fi tv-series "Dark". See more Read all reviews
