Critics Consensus

While it's nowhere near as thrilling as turtle tipping your way to 128 lives, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a colorful -- albeit thinly plotted -- animated adventure that has about as many Nintendos as Nintendon'ts.

Without overplaying its hand, it hits all the major notes within the wild, inventive universe of block-breaking and Goomba-stomping.

This lively computer-animated take on the video game just opened and it’s already the biggest box-office smash of 2023. Despite lapses into dull and disposable, it’s also a godsend for parents seeking family entertainment for the 5-year-old in all of us.

Among the many errors of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, screenwriter Matthew Fogel plops him and his brother Luigi into a milquetoast Brooklyn family that doubts them and disrespects their small-business dreams.

But hey, if you’ve ever lied awake at night wondering how many individual threads there are in Mario’s monogrammed cap, then this is definitely the film for you.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is tedious, vapid and incredibly trite from a writing perspective.

The Super Mario movie is one that turned out to be a pleasant surprise. I was one of those people skeptical of Chris Pratt's casting as Mario. It turned out to be forgiveable. The casting worked out, and I can't complain about any of them. Jack Black's song is hilarious and memorable. Spoiler alert: in the movie, thee writer poke fun at Mario and Luigi's accents, breaking the fourth wall, and I'm ok with it. The movie was a perfect blend of nostalgia for those of us who grew up playing the games and fresh for the new generation to enjoy. I loved the various characters, and if they do a sequel, I look forward to seeing more. For anyone who hasn't seen it, stay till after the end because there's an end credit scene. It's equally enjoyable for kids and adults. Definitely worth a watch. I call this a successful movie adaptation of a video game. Well done to everyone involved. 7/10
