What to Know

Critics Consensus

A bleak, handsomely mounted Western, The Thicket overcomes a few familiar genre beats with a gritty story, immersive frontier visuals, and a scene-stealing performance from Juliette Lewis.

It’s probably somewhat too stately. But it is an odd, mostly compelling yarn, and acted with gusto and shot with real physical commitment to the wide open spaces and raw chill of the elements. Go to Full Review

The Thicket is an awful story, in a great way. Go to Full Review

Juliette Lewis steals the show in a bleak, action-heavy Western that lacks the depth to match its gritty visuals. Go to Full Review

The movie constantly asks, “Are the good guys really all that good?” Again, this isn’t necessarily an original concept for the Western genre, but director Elliott Lester handles the idea with grace and delicacy that make the question feel genuine. Go to Full Review

justin b Sep 20, 2024 I will say, the trailer made the film seem like it would have more high octane action, but whats in the trailer in terms of action is in the movie and nothing more. But, the writing, acting and cinematography made up for it. My wife and I really enjoyed the film, so much I actually want to read the book now. See more Erin Sep 9, 2024 It was a really good movie. It had a really good plot and storyline. The actors and actresses did an excellent job. See more Joseph S Sep 7, 2024 So fantastic. Dinklage is awesome, of course, but not even the best part. Levon Hawke is a revelation. See more Victor L Sep 6, 2024 Not sure why theres a lack of promotion for this movie. I didnt even know it was coming out. I saw it tonight and Im glad I did because its an exceptional film. The whole cast did great. Peter Dink stood out and really nailed this roll. See more Keith B @KAB73 2 days ago Very entertaining. Lewis is a believable villain and Dinklage portrays an unwilling hero. See more TheMovieSearch R @TheMovieSearch 3 days ago The Thicket is a film I thought was genuinely awful. It never resonated with me in the way I expected, and it failed to capitalize on the potential it seemed to have. The screenplay felt lackluster, and I struggled to understand what was supposed to be the definitive story. Nothing really connected for me in terms of story building, character development, or screenplay structure. One of the biggest problems was the casting. I thought there were several questionable casting choices, and some of the actors felt like they were being used simply because they were recognizable Hollywood names. Unfortunately, bigger names do not automatically make a movie better, and I felt like some choices actually brought the film down. The Thicket was not something I enjoyed, and it is definitely not a movie I would revisit or rewatch. I also cannot recommend it. The story never came together, the casting did not work, and the execution left me disappointed. I honestly hated the experience. See more Read all reviews
