A cop deals with the death of his mother while giving a heartfelt eulogy at her funeral.

Critics Consensus

Thunder Road deftly balances emotionally affecting drama against bruising comedy - and serves as an outstanding calling card for writer-director-star Jim Cummings.

In the spirit of many great comedians, Jim Cummings has a knack for taking lines that shouldn't be funny and transforming them into accidental zingers.

Cummings's feature debut doesn't always get the balance right, but when it does it packs a bittersweet punch.

It takes a few narrative risks that won't win everyone over, but it allowed itself to be complex and conflicted about itself. That kept you on the edge of your seat.

It doesn’t always balance its dark comedy and intense melancholy, and it ends in a way that’s a bit too neat for such a story. But when it gets that balance just right, it packs one hell of a gut punch.

It's hard to describe just how incredibly moving this tragicomedy is, led triumphantly by a marvellous performance from Cummings.

Thunder Road is a painfully funny comedy with a break-out performance from writer and director Jim Cummings. Strikingly original and might be the best comedic independent film in years.

I would never call this a comedy. And would never give this guy a gun. It’s a story of family dysfunction, mental illness and suicide. Hard to watch.

This guy is the best writer/director/actor in the biz today, and it's not close. There is nothing remotely similar to one of his forays into ... I have no word for it. Singularity?

It's a compelling lead performance, but the tone is all over the place. It starts off as a sort of black comedy then veers away steeply and the story - such as it is - only resolves through a writing sleight of hand

One of the best films to come out in the last 10 years...in comparison to some of the Oscar nominations in the past this guy deserves one..its melancholy with a hint of humour in the script..certainly is not a comedy. Its just superb

The movie had its humorous moments but, the editing style makes each scene feel a bit too contrived.

Cummings understands that there's a very fine line between cringe comedy and devastating tragedy and his near perfect performance does both seamlessly.
