Kevin L @Lakeman Mar 23, 2026 An interesting enough movie to make it a worthy Sunday watch. Sutherland makes for a convincing enough Gauguin- droll, sharp-tongued, & fiercely committed to his art as much as to disdain for European neuroses & bourgeosie propriety. Supporting roles are well played. Van Sydow is great as the very bigoted, anthropoligically ignorant, & very misogynistic Strindberg. Sofie Gråbøl as Judith made for much more pleasant conversation & energy in the film. Generally well directed by Henning Carlsen, but w/ more melodrama than I care for along w/ an overuse of background music. The strings are more of a maudlin distraction than complimentary. Some questionable editing at times as well. 3.2 stars, largely for Sutherland & some of the thematic emphasis. The film doesn't attempt to be exhaustive or even particularly objective, but it gives a believable glimpse of this artist. NOTE: Do not confuse this film with the more recent and vastly inferior GAUGUIN film starring KEIFER Sutherland. See more Read all reviews
